Do you know that your current shampoo or lotion may be bad for you? Ingredients that are found in some makeup and even sunscreens can go straight into our bloodstream, which can directly have an effect on our hormones. If you want to stay away from these ingredients, and you only want the best for your skin, hair, and nails, make sure you read this article.
Top 7 Ingredients You Should Avoid
1. Fragrance/ Parfum
Although you probably own a dozen perfumes, you should make sure your makeup products are fragrance-free. Synthetic fragrances can irritate your body, interfere with your hormones, or even cause lung issues or dermatitis. Also, did you know that fragrance is one out of top 5 allergens in the world?
You can find this ingredient in many body washes and conditioners, but also in eyeshadows and nail polishes. Formaldehyde can affect your immune system and cause unwanted allergies or skin reactions.
3. Artificial Colours
When purchasing something colorful, watch out for letters D & C on its packaging. These are carcinogen and are found in many lipsticks that we purchase on a yearly basis, especially in those pigmented red shades. Lipstick can be easily ingested into our stomach, which is why it is important to purchase it with the right label and to throw it away after it expires.
4. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate
SLS is found in over 90% of our cleaning products, and it is quite common in every household. We can find it in shampoos, acne treatments, and mascaras. Once it is combined with other chemicals it can act as a carcinogen and it can affect our eyes, lungs, skin, and kidneys. Worth noting, these can be derived from natural sources, like coconut or palm oil, which means you should avoid these products on your face as they can clog your pores as well.
5. Parabens (ethyl, butyl, methyl, propyl)
Parabens such as ethyl, methyl or propyl can stop the growth of bacteria in many of our makeup or skincare products, which is a good thing at first. However, once they prevent the growth, they will produce estrogen properties which can increase the risk of cancer. Parabens are found in many makeup items, shaving gels, spray tans and shampoos.
Polyethylene is found in many lip scrubs or even face scrubs as well as body washes and makeup items. It is very gentle and used as a proper exfoliant, but is also often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane which is a human carcinogen which can irritate your skin.
7. Petroleum distillates
This petroleum is found in mascara tubes and it can cause irritation or contact dermatitis. This substance is also used in heating oils and as automobile fuel and is often contaminated with cancer impurities.
